Ecotourism in Embonas, Rhodes – Explore Mount Attavyros

Located at the foot of the highest mountain in Rhodes, the picturesque village of Embonas is a hidden gem for ecotourism lovers. Surrounded by lush forests, rare flora and fauna, scenic trails, and a rich agricultural tradition, Embonas offers a unique nature-based travel experience.

🌲 Kyparissi Natural Forest – A Protected Monument of Nature

Just outside the village, the Kyparissi Natural Forest, part of the Natura 2000 network and one of Greece’s 51 Natural Monuments, offers:

WINE TOURISM (ENOTOURISM)

Embonas is considered the wine capital of Rhodes. For generations, locals have cultivated native grape varieties including:

  • Athiri
  • Mandilaria (Amorgiano)
  • Moschato
  • And to a lesser extent: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malagousia

From August to September, vineyards are harvested and PDO wines (Protected Designation of Origin) are produced. From September to October, locals also distill the famous “Souma”, a strong traditional spirit.

Wine lovers can:

  • Taste red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines

  • Join grape harvesting or wine-making sessions

  • Pair wines with delicious local dishes made from fresh ingredients

🌾 Agrοtourism – Live the Rural Life

With prior arrangements, visitors can participate in agricultural activities alongside local farmers. Depending on the season, you may get involved with:

  • Grape harvesting
  • Olive picking
  • Collecting peaches, nectarines, apples, citrus fruits
  • Planting or harvesting vegetables and tomatoes

⛰️ Mountain Tourism on Mount Attavyros

At 1,216 meters, Mount Attavyros is the tallest mountain in Rhodes and the Dodecanese. The hike to the summit takes around 2.5 hours and is of moderate difficulty. Make sure to bring water, as there are no natural springs on the way.

At the summit:

  • Ruins of an ancient temple of Zeus Attavyrios
  • Breathtaking panoramic views of Karpathos, Chalki, and the interior of Rhodes
  • Occasional snow during winter months
  • Recently improved access via a dirt road (recommended for 4×4 vehicles)
